Gary Payton II Foundation Hosts Successful Virtual Workshop with DREDF

Know Your Rights Virtual Workshop

Workshop Overview

The Gary Payton II Foundation recently collaborated with the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF) to host a highly successful virtual “Know Your Rights” workshop for students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. This event, designed for parents, guardians, and educators, was a pivotal step in empowering families with essential knowledge and resources.

DREDF, known for its dedication to disability rights, provided an abundance of information during the workshop. The session focused on educating the audience about federal laws that assist families in securing a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) for children with disabilities. Key topics included identifying common barriers to evaluation, eligibility determination, the development and implementation of 504 and IEP plans, and effective problem-solving strategies and dispute resolution options.

Engaged Participation

Participants were highly engaged, with many parents taking the opportunity to ask questions specific to their child’s needs. The interactive nature of the workshop also allowed parents to share their own experiences and support each other, creating a collaborative and supportive environment.

Originally planned as a two-hour event, the workshop extended beyond its scheduled time due to the high level of participation and interest. Gary Payton II himself made a special appearance to commend the guardians on the call for their resilience and unwavering support in fighting for their children’s rights.

Commitment to Inclusion

To ensure our workshops are inclusive, we provided captioners and interpreters so that everyone could learn and participate effectively. This commitment to accessibility will continue in all future workshops hosted by the foundation.

The GPII Foundation remains committed to being a pillar of support for families navigating the education system to secure the necessary help and resources for their children to succeed in the classroom. A heartfelt thank you goes out to our partners at DREDF for their exceptional work in making this virtual workshop a resounding success.

Ongoing Support

THANK YOU to all who attended, and supported near and far. Together, we can make a difference—one fundraiser, one partnership, and one life transformed at a time.
